Mowing the Lawn

Started my day off with a 4 mile run. I was a little bit sore due to running in my Vibrams yesterday. Nothing that I was worried about since tomorrow is a rest day. The run went good, and I felt good afterward. I went and watched a football game, then I came home and mowed the lawn.
My lower legs are screaming. I'm not sure why this happens, but it has happened before. The run ends fine, the legs are fine; later on if I stretch my calves inadvertently while bending/squatting, or I do something that uses my calves (something as simple as walking behind a lawn mower), I feel pain.
I bought some compression calve guards, I'm going to try wearing them the rest of the day and maybe through the night to see if that helps.

Found a rhythm

Ran 5 mile race today, many good runners there.
After 2 miles, I found a rhythm that helped me maintain/ my pace for next three miles. Synchronized a breath for every two steps off of my right foot.
It helped me catch, run with, and pass 4 runners, two of them in the last mile.
After many years of racing, you can still learn....

todays run

| My goal was 10 miles for todays run. When I got up I was so tired, I almost skipped it. Thought about how I'd feel afterwards and I got up and went. When I got out there the wind was heavy, I said to myself cut it from 10 to 6. But then I decided I'd keep goin with my plan. The wind slowed my pace almost a minute slower per mile. But on the turn around comin back it helped me. Some times I was in the 8 minutes range it felt great when I finished I was at 10.10miles in 1 hour 39 minutes. I felt great! |

My Journey in Weight Loss and fitness

Well I have been working on my weight loss program since February 2010. I started at 224lbs and I am now 205lbs.
Today I ran my whole neighborhood route that I have usually been walking/running.
What an accomplishment!
I am trying to get down to 175lbs.
|
johnnyk8 says: You can totally do that! I started at 255 and am now 168 -175 (it swings with water loss).
Running, cross training and healthy eating oh and hard work are and a sure fire way to succeed.
Keep doing what you're doing. Good progress so far!

Garmin 405X

I am having a strange problem with my Garmin 405. Everytime I start the timer, it keeps recording the minutes elapsed correctly but does not record the distance run. So at the end of the run I see the time correctly but incorrect miles. Sometimes it starts recording late and sometimes it just stops recording in between and then starts again. and these are routes I have used it on before, so not even a satellite issue.
Anyone with a similiar problem.
And anyone going in for a Garmin, can easily avoid this touch technology 405. Have friends and family really happy with their 305s etc. |

Trying my first Tri

| It's been quite awhile since I've written here, though I read everyone's posts every day! :) Originally, when I joined in January, I thought that my goal was to run a half marathon. Somewhere along the way, that goal morphed into completing a lifelong dream of doing a triathlon. Long story short, I ran into someone who competes in tri's all of the time, mentioned that I always wanted to do one, was told that I absolutely could do one, and I signed up that very night! The rest of the summer has been spent swimming, biking, and running in preparation for the race. That brings us to today...I'm just a little over a week out to my first triathlon (Sept. 12th). I'm getting ready for a taper week...feeling excited beyond belief...and maybe just a little nervous as well. I'd love any advice that you all have to offer. |
adigerati says: My advice? Give it your best tri! (that was bad)
Good luck, have fun with it.
johnnyk8 says: Nice!! Tris are such a great accomplishment. If I ever built up the stones I would do a tri as my first race. Discuss this article. (2 comments) |

Friday and Feelin' Good -

Lookin' forward to a bit of an extended weekend. As I make my plans I have to smile and think about the fact that my son wants to take a long ride on his bike with gramma and then go golfing. I am proud that my boy knows sitting on his hiney playing video games and watching TV turns you into a slob. Don't get me wrong, he gets to do those things and has all the PS# and 360, DS blah blah blah. But open admits that he knows those stationary activities lead to problems. He and I are gonna rock it out this weekend for sure and have a guys's weekend. My wife is going to to MN to take part in an art show. Not a CRAFT show but an ART show. There is a difference. This weekend she is presenting photography. Many of these photos were taken while we are doing our (non-stationary activities).
On the fitness tip I'm feeling quite good and I would say my hip is about 90% healed up. Now when I take off in the AM the I hobble it for about 100 yards or so just slightly. I'm quite su... Read full entry |

Wrapped up my week with a great 4.9 mile run. I have felt great all week. (except for the mental battle against the clock on Monday) Today was no exception. I PRd on my almost 5 mile route I ran it in 37:10 for a 7:32 min/mile (my fastest pace of the week). I felt good through out the run and think I might be able to hold this pace for another mile or so. Will try and find out next week.
My week stats were
Mon 6.9 miles 56:24 8:13 min/mile
Tue 5.3 miles 42.25 8:02 min/mile
Wed 3.4 miles 25:36 7:34 min/mile
thur 6.9 miles 55:18 8:02 min/miles
Fri 4.9 miles 37:10 7:32 min/miles
Total 27.35 miles
3:36:58
7:54 min/mile average pace
I want to get all runs down below 8 min/miles.
Hope everyone has a great run and a wonderful weekend. |

Broke out the Vibram Five Fingers for this morning's run (an easy two miler).
Let me back track a little and mention that when I decided to become a runner, I decided to become a barefoot runner. My first few weeks of the Couch to 5k program was done barefoot; right up until the day that I picked up some shards of glass halfway through my run. It wasn't until I saw my bloody footprints in the entryway of my house that I realized what I had done.
In the interest of keeping my wife from killing me, I put some socks on my now pain riddled feet (didn't hurt till I saw it) and gingerly made my way up stairs to the bath tub. After rinsing the blood off, I found little bits of glass embedded in my feet and there was even a piece of glass about the size of a diamond in an engagement ring hanging out between my toes.
I had felt some pain during the run and the smart thing to do would have been to stop and look to see what was causing the pain. The not so smart thing to do woul... Read full entry |

Heading North

| I squeezed in an easy 5 mile run this morning. I will now be packing up the minivan with gear and family and heading up North to the middle of Wisconsin to camp over the weekend. Originally I was only going to do a quick 2 or 3 miler, but I figured that since I will be confined in the van with everyone the longer run would help keep me calm. I have planned a 20 miler for either Saturday or Sunday which I am really looking forward to. It will be really nice to run through the woods. I won't be forgetting to bring the Garmin. :-) Have great weekends and runs. See y'all in a few days. |
chrissy1 says: Enjoy the weekend away and please b sure to let us know how that 20 miler goes.
adigerati says: Be sure to read in the manual for your Garmin how to use it to find your way back to where you started. That's something that might really come in handy during a 20 mile trek through the woods.
johnnyk8 says: I'm headed North too!
Sposta be a high of 50 and a low of 30 this weekend up in my neck of the woods.
Enjoy a Leinie's while you are there.

I have committed to running in my second 1/2 marathon. Whew, what was I thinking? It is hot here in Weston but that does not stop me from my runs.
First week I ran in the neighborhood of the Ridges. They have a nice route around the lake. Its about a 2.5 mile loop.
I go twice around for a longer run.
I will try to upload the route.
Keep on running.
